Written in 2016 during Donald Trump's presidential election campaign and his promise to 'Make America great again'. Meanwhile, over in the UK, the likes of Theresa May, Nigel Farage and any number of politicians or would-be politicians were claiming they would 'Make Britain great again'. I think the UK is already great sometimes, and I think it could be great at other times. I do, however, think my opinion on what makes a country great differs somewhat to the likes of Trump, Farage, May etc.

International Anthem
I have a question dear
if you have any answers please
to put an end to some of my fears
answer my question please?
What makes a country great?
What is the benchmark that we make?
How can we gauge, and how can we state
that a country is great?
Is it the number of millionaires
draped in diamonds, gold and furs
who breeze through life without a care
do they make a country great?
Or is it based on the economy?
The stock exchange or industry?
Jobs or universities?
Do they make a country great?
Or is it based on the wars gone by?
The number of those who fought and died?
Some for a cause, others were sold lies
to make their country great
I'll try to answer you dear
to put an end to some of your fears
because to me it seems so clear
what makes a country great
How you treat the most vulnerable,
the old, the sick, the disabled
and hold to account the culpable
for those who are left in need
Ability to love and care
Show compassion when none is there
When everyone are treated fair,
That what makes a country great
A nation built on equality,
of tolerance and unity
A helping hand to others, you see,
It's what makes a country great
I've tried to answer you dear
to put an end to some of your fears
because to me it seems so clear
what makes a country great
